El Stronato is the 35-year period in the history of Paraguay when the nation was ruled by Alfredo Stroessner. ==Historical context == In the aftermath of the Second World War, Juan Natalicio González was elected President of Paraguay, but his government was soon fell, and Federico Chávez was elected in his place. Three weeks after taking office, Chávez imposed a state of siege, using his emergency powers to attack the supporters of González and of ex-President Felipe Molas López despite claiming to be a democratic leader.〔Richard S.
